After surviving a sudden-onset transient heart failure called takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a 69-year-old patient received the Impella heart pump which mimics heart function when the heart can no longer function on its own. “There are no other devices or technologies that enable the heart to rest and recover with a minimally invasive approach,” said Shon Chakrabarti, medical director at Abiomed Inc.
