Does Artificial Intelligence Know Who You Really Are? | eNews from OWC

AI summaries are now the first point of interaction between companies and their audiences. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews generate direct responses that instantly define companies, technologies, and experts. How does AI do it? By collecting, at warp speed, everything known from media coverage, analyst commentary, reviews, forums, and industry publications across the internet. It’s critical to understand how your company, or yourself, is presented by AI, and what drives the summary of your identity.

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) focuses on rankings. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on brand presence in AI answers. SEO success depends on page position and click-through rates. Between 60 and 70 percent of search queries now end without the user progressing to another destination site. Audiences learn about companies, products, and competitors directly from AI answers. Lower click-through rates and reduced website traffic place greater weight on third-party sources.
  • Earned media drives AI visibility. Coverage in reputable publications is one of the most important factors for AI-generated answers. AI models consistently cite established sources such as major news outlets, government websites, and respected industry publications. Companies mentioned across these sources appear more frequently in AI responses, making media relations more important than ever.
  • Reputation in AI requires assessment. Conflicting information and outdated coverage negatively impact AI reputation. Old leadership pages or inaccurate company descriptions often remain online longer than they should. Discussions on forums or social platforms can also surface in AI search results. Companies should audit their digital footprint and correct inaccurate information before it impacts AI-generated answers. OWC’s AI Risk Assessment evaluates how companies appear in AI-generated answers and identifies reputational risks across the digital ecosystem.
  • Results change frequently. AI-generated answers evolve as new information and discussions appear online. AI platforms also regularly update their models, sources, and features. Smart companies periodically review how their industry and competitors appear online, track how those responses change, and identify which sources drive them.

AI thinks it knows who and what you are.

Is it right? Effective public relations demands that it is.
